April 2023 The European Weightlifting Federation strongly condemns the incident that happened during the Opening Ceremony of the European Weightlifting Championships in Yerevan on April 14, 2023, in which a person set fire to the flag of Azerbaijan. It is with great sadness that we have learned of the death of Mr. Rolf MAIER at the age of 86. He was and will remain a great figure of French weightlifting. Three times selected at the Olympic Games (1960, 1964 and 1968), he was bronze medallist in the 75kg class at the 1965 European Championships. Technical advisor in his region of Picardy, he brought Daniel SENET to the title of world champion in the snatch in 1981 in Lille (Fr.) On April 10, 2023, the Weightlifting Federation of the Republic of Moldova hosted a coaching seminar as part of the IWF Coaching Licensing Project and the EWF Pilot Program. Mr. Colin Buckley, EWF Coaching Research & Scientific Committee Chairman, presided over the seminar, which was held at the State University of Sport of Moldova with the support of the National Anti-Doping Agency.
