Nordic Championships Landskrona, Sweden Oct. 27-28, 2023 – The Nordic Weightlifting Federation comes to life in the fall when two championships are held. Landskrona, Sweden, welcomed lifters and officials from Denmark, Faroe Islands, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden to participate in the senior championships. All in all 62 lifters competed in the competition.
On the women’s side Denmark performed the strongest winning the team trophy. The best female lifter was Norway’s Sol Anette Waaler who broke three Nordic records by snatching 87 kg and clean-and-jerking 107 kg for a total of 194 kg in the 55 kg weight category.
The Team Trophy on the men’s side travels back to Finland. The Best Male Lifter Title was awarded to Denmark’s Omed Alam who posted a 330 kg total in the 89 kg category. He was close to breaking the Nordic record of 333 kg.
The NWF used Q-points instead of Robi or Sinclair points for the first time. Dr Marianne Huebner and her working team (see Q-points formula – NORDIC WEIGHTLIFTING FEDERATION) explain why there has been a need for another formula. The differences with the Sinclair points are not great but extremely important for the Nordics as the data base used for the Q-points revels in Fair Play.
In odd years the Electoral Congress takes place and the same leadership was re-elected for the third time in a row. Since the addition of mandates since the last elections, this counts as the second term out of a possible five terms. Nordic and Finnish Weightlifting Federation President Karoliina Lundahl from Finland, Vice President Patrik Helgesson from Sweden and General Secretary Trond Kvilhaug from Norway thanked the Congress for their trust.
As proposed by the athletes the Congress also passed a new concept of competition in order to increase the competitiveness at the championships: at the Nordics in 2024 the athletes will compete in only six bodyweight categories but allowing three athletes per MF to compete in each class.
“This will add some excitement to the competition as a country can take a clean sweep of the medals for the first time at the Championships,” tells Simon Darville from Denmark, an athlete who has worked on the athlete proposal.
In two weeks the Nordics travel to Rovaniemi, Finland, for the Youth and Junior Nordic Championships.
