Yerevan, Armenia – The European Weightlifting Federation (EWF) President Kt. Antonio Conflitti and General Secretary Dr. Milan Mihajlovic, conducted a technical visit to Yerevan, Armenia from January 29th to 31st to inspect preparations for the upcoming 2023 European Championships. The competition, which will be held in April 2023, marks the first major weightlifting event to be organized in Armenia,  showcasing the country’s strong tradition in the sport.

During the visit, the EWF delegation was impressed with the progress being made at the reconstruction site of the training facility.

President Conflitti stated, “I am incredibly impressed with the preparations being made for the 2023 European Championships in Yerevan, Armenia. The dedication and hard work of the Armenian government and weightlifting federation is truly inspiring. From the reconstruction of the training facility to the support received from the Prime Minister’s Staff, it is clear that Armenia is fully committed to making this event a memorable experience for all participants.”

The EWF leadership also met with Arayik Harutyunyan, Chief of the Prime Minister’s Staff, Karen Giloyan, Deputy Minister of Education, Science, Culture and Sports, and the Armenian Weightlifting Federation.

EWF President Antonio Conflitti stated: “As the President of the European Weightlifting Federation, I am deeply impressed by the dedication and hard work shown in preparing for the 2023 European Championships in Yerevan, Armenia. The Armenian weightlifting tradition is truly remarkable and I am honored to be a part of this significant event.”

General Secretary Dr. Milan Mihajlovic added: “With great pleasure, the European Weightlifting Federation had the opportunity to visit Yerevan for a technical inspection of the 2023 European Championships preparations. The efforts of the Armenian government and weightlifting federation to bring this event to life are commendable, and the competition is sure to be a magnificent showcase of weightlifting in Armenia.”

The Chief of the Prime Minister’s Staff, Arayik Harutyunyan, expressed his delight that Armenia would host a significant weightlifting competition. He welcomed the European Weightlifting Federation to Yerevan with pride and expressed his excitement to be a part of this historic moment for weightlifting in Armenia.

General Secretary Dr. Milan Mihajlovic conveyed, “The European Weightlifting Federation is elated to witness the culmination of a long-awaited dream with the 2023 European Championships finally making its way to Yerevan, Armenia. It was in 1983 that the original plans for the World  Championships were slated to take place in Yerevan, however, circumstances led to its relocation to Moscow. After four decades, we are honored to bring the major weightlifting competition back to Yerevan. This is a historic moment for the weightlifting community, and the European Weightlifting Federation is eager to celebrate and support it.”

The EWF and the Armenian Weightlifting Federation also signed an agreement regarding all technical aspects of the competition, further solidifying their commitment to the success of the 2023 European Championships in Yerevan, Armenia.

The EWF President Kt. Antonio Conflitti stated: “We are satisfied to announce the signing of a comprehensive agreement between the European Weightlifting Federation and the Armenian Weightlifting Federation for the 2023 European Championships. This partnership will ensure the successful execution of the event and will leave a lasting impact on the weightlifting community. A historic moment for us all.”

The 2023 European Championships promises to be a landmark event for weightlifting in Armenia, highlighting the country’s long-standing tradition in the sport and the unwavering support of the government.
