The professional community of Hungarian weightlifting gathered on November 13 at the Olympic Training Camp in Tata for the national conference entitled “New Directions – HWF 1st Weightlifting Day”, which created one of the broadest professional collaborations in the sport in recent decades. The all-day programme was attended by coaches, athletes, club managers, university students, interested representatives of other sports, sports science experts and the leaders of the Federation to jointly look at the present, challenges and possible paths of weightlifting in the future.

The conference was opened by Attila Ádámfi, the vice president of the HWF, who gave a comprehensive overview of the organizational and professional renewal of the Federation. The “HWF 2.0” programme – which he presented in detail in his presentation – aims to completely rethink the operation, from transparency and the renewal of regulations to the modernisation of communication and the reorganisation of international relations.

Speakers representing the HWF included Akos Nagy, HWF General Secretary speaking about the operational improvements and possibilities and Ferenc Gyurkovics, Head Coach highlighting the new strategies for the national teams including complex preparation integrating several scientific fields.

External speakers included international expert, Ervin Rozsnyik from Serbia and professional coaches from Track & Field, Cycling and Swimming.
Lectures were presented in the different aspects of professional preparations and coaching, including Long Term Athlete Development (LTAD), human kinesiology, regeneration, human biology and Anti-Doping.

The Hungarian Weightlifting Federation (HWF) held its next Congress on 15 November, the most important item on the agenda of which was the comprehensive amendment of the Constitution.

At the beginning, Dr. Péter Nagy, the President of the HWF, reported on the results of the past six months. He emphasised that despite the known difficulties, the preparation and competition of the athletes, as well as the domestic competition system remained uninterrupted – furthermore, the HWF successfully organised the Olympic Hopes Competition, with the participation of CZE, POL, SVK teams.

The President also highlighted that:
– significant cooperation agreements were concluded
– after many years of absence, weightlifting is again included in the ‘Hungarian Student Olympics’,
– the national championship is returning to television,
– to the information of the State Secretariat for Sport, the state support of the HWF will increase significantly in 2026

The completely revised Statutes not only create full compliance with the current legislation, but also represent a significant step forward in the application of democratic functioning, transparency and international standards – in particular the principles of good governance.
The most important new elements are:
– Athlete representation in the EB,
– Term limit: an EB member can be re-elected a maximum of two times,
– The representation of both genders in the EB is not mandatory, thus ensuring balanced participation of the sexes in decision-making.

The Congress adopted the new Statutes without a vote against.

The last item on the agenda of the Congress also received unanimous support for the establishment of the Visegrad 4 regional Weightlifting Federation, which could open up new perspectives in Central European cooperation and the development of the sport.

The event was also graced by the presence of László Fábián, Secretary General of the Hungarian Olympic Committee.

Statement by Dr. Péter Nagy, President
“It was a great pleasure to see unity in Hungarian weightlifting again. This positive feedback confirms that we are on the right track, but we know that the goal is still far away – we have a lot of work ahead of us.”

“We greatly appreciate the trust and support of the State Secretariat for Sport. It is important for us that they also see and recognise our results and plans.”
