In an important gathering that underscores BWL’s ambitions on the global stage, CEO Matthew Curtain, and Jenny Tong, Chair of BWL Athletes Committee and Vice Chair of EWF Athlete Commission welcomed international weightlifting dignitaries to Birmingham on 10 April 2024.
This visit by Antonio Conflitti, EWF President and IWF Executive Board Member alongside prominent figures from IWF, signified a strengthening of international ties and a shared vision for the sport’s future in the United Kingdom.
The core focus of President Conflitti’s visit was aimed at evaluating BWL potential candidacy for the city of Birmingham to host the 2027 European Championships. The meetings, which also saw the participation of UK Sport Senior Events Manager Bev Ward, reflected a proactive approach towards securing a landmark event that could further elevate the sport within the region and beyond.
Moreover, parallel discussions were also held with IWF First Vice President Ursula Papandrea, Vice-President Attila Adamfi and CEO Achilleas Tsogas on topics of mutual interest including the Olympic Games Paris 2024, sport innovations plans, and overall development initiatives.
